Medical

Children of Vietnam provides medical aid through a number of programs which include the following general "basic" services:

  • Emergency treatment at the Da Nang Hospital for poor people who cannot afford medical care or stays in the hospital.
  • Generic medicines taken to Vietnam and given to clinics who in turn will dispense the products properly and without cost to the recipients.
  • Medicine Packs: These are collections of medicines that can be purchased in Vietnam and provided to the clinics.  They can be tailor made to the needs of the local population.
  • Hearing aids for children at Da Nang Deaf School.  The devices are acquired locally for about $100 US and given to children.
  • Orthopedic surgeries and prosthesis.
  • Clinics using local providers such as dental, etc.
Medical Sponsor: Limb Operation
One-time sponsorship from $200 USD helps a child walk, perhaps for the first time.
Medical Sponsor: Wheelchairs for Independence
One-time sponsorship of $105 allows a poor child to be mobile with a "push/pull" wheelchair.
Medical Sponsor: Heart Surgery
One-time sponsorship from $1,500 USD keeps a poor child alive so that he/she can jump and play just like any other child.
1 In the picture to the left you see our Director, Ms. Huong, writing a check to a mother whose child had an operation at the Da Nang General Hospital.  Many times the difference between a child getting care or, in some cases, between a person living or dying is the check book that Ms. Huong has in her hand.  Medical care, hospital stays and medicines are not free in Vietnam.

Many of the people in the area where we work are some distance from the hospital in Da Nang.  Therefore a number of clinics have developed where people can go for minor illnesses.  We support a number of these clinics through "medicine packs" ($250 US) where we assemble the needed medicines and supplies and give them to the clinic worker.  The medicines that we provide are aspirin, acetaminophen, pain relievers, antibiotics, etc. -  we do not provide any treatments that would include a long term reliance on the item involved such as cholesterol regulation, blood pressure medication, etc. We only provide short term medications. In 2001 we provided over $70,000 in medicines alone.
